So now school is about to start any week and I decided to make an appointment with a dermatologist instead of purchasing useless and painful remedies. Of course, as my luck would have it, Kate (my youngest) starts developing some bumps on the back of her knee between the time I called the dermatologist and the actual appointment date!
Well, by the time we went to the dermatologist Matthew had 68 (yes, I counted) and Kate had 12, to include 3 on her face!
The derm was extremely nice and explained that molluscum is typically caught in the pool or around water and has the nick name “water warts” which definitely explained a lot and that it spreads very easily…as if I didn’t realize this!
She told me that at their office they could either freeze them off, which was not an option as Matthew had so many and Kate was only 3 OR they could use beetle juice. She was very clear that the beetle juice would in fact make the bumps blister and may be slightly painful but that it was the only thing that would work. Oh, and she couldn’t apply any to the molluscum bumps on Kate’s face.
***Side note – we found out that the bump I was so concerned about on Matthew’s face was just a heat pimple that he had agitated!***
She applied the beetle juice on about 20 bumps on Matthew and 5 of Kate’s as we had made a plan to break it up into 2-3 visits since Matthew was claiming (very loudly) that it hurt soooo bad & of course his sister followed suit) and then put some bandages on them.
I followed her instructions and the bumps started getting red, which she told me would happen, so I thought to myself this is it! In a few days this nightmare will be over!
The kids started crying and complaining about how much it was hurting so I tried everything I could to settle them down and then the following day I took the bandages off and what I saw was horrifying!!! I don’t know what I was I thinking when the dermatologist said the bumps would form into blisters but it certainly was not what I staring at!!!!
The blisters were huge and gross and filled with liquid and very very red and inflamed! I literally cried because of how terrible of I mom I thought I was for putting my little ones through this and not believing them! I honestly don’t understand how doctors feel comfortable applying this terrible stuff on children!! No wonder they wouldn’t put it on Kate’s face and thank God!
Ok, I apologize for the rant, and I wish I had taken a picture to post on here but it was really that terrible! (I will try to find one on google that isn’t too disturbing)
On top of all of this, once the blisters popped and finally healed they left scars in a lot of areas as a constant reminder of how horrible that stuff is!
I was now at a point where I didn’t want to torture my children anymore so I decided to let the molluscum ride its course even if it took 2 years.
(Don’t worry, there is good news up ahead!)
